Ministry probes teacher’s caning

KEMAMAN: The Education Ministry has begun its probe into an allegation by the National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) that a female teacher of a secondary school in Johor was caned in front of her students.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the matter was being viewed seriously and the inquiry would determine whether there was any attempt to undermine the headmistress of the school.

“My deputy Noh (Datuk Noh Omar) is tasked to probe the matter,” he said after opening SMK Geliga here yesterday.

It was reported that the teacher of SMK Buluh Kasap in Segamat was given public caning in front of her students about three days ago.

The teacher was said to be standing close to her students during the morning assembly when the incensed principal unleashed her rotan and struck her.

NUTP secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said the union was in the dark as to why the principal had resorted to such an unwarranted act.
