I don't think we should be proud, at all. No offense meant to Dr. Mus, who I think is very brave and personally rather heroic for undertaking this task, but I don't think it's something all Malaysians can be proud of.
Here's why. We're using Russian training, Russian spacecraft carrying our man in a Russion suit taking off from a Russian cosmodrome put together by the Russian space program. And we're proud because..... Russia bloeh? Sure. But Malaysia?
What did Malaysia do? How can Malaysia be proud of using the space programs of others as a taxi service? There are no obvious technical benefits, but no doubt Malaysians will be told once again, that they are "boleh". The trouble is, they're not. It's not their space program.
Any country can taxi on another's program. The guy is of course talented, fulfilling all the requirements set the by Russians to go into space, but Malaysa boleh what? Dr. Mus boleh? Fine by me. But not Malaysia.
So, Nasa gets it right when they call him a space flight participant, a term used for space tourists.
Check out www.nasa.gov and searh for Expedition 16. Check out the crew list.
